AI Readiness
How to Assess Your AI Readiness
Before investing in AI, your organisation needs to understand how ready it actually is. This guide walks through the seven dimensions of organisational readiness that matter most.
Why Readiness Matters Before You Buy
Many AI projects fail not because the technology does not work, but because the organisation was not ready to use it. Data was in the wrong format. Internal teams lacked the skills to manage the output. Leadership did not have a clear sense of what they were measuring. The supplier's tool was technically excellent - but the buyer was not in a position to benefit from it.
Assessing your readiness before you buy is not a bureaucratic exercise. It is how you protect your investment and give your AI project the best possible chance of success.
The Seven Dimensions of Organisational Readiness
Organisational readiness assesses how prepared the buyer is to evaluate and implement an AI solution. Supplier fit assesses how closely a particular supplier may align with the buyer's defined requirement.
**1. Requirement and strategic clarity.** Is your business requirement clearly defined? Do you have a specific problem or opportunity, measurable outcomes, and strategic alignment?
**2. Data readiness and governance.** Do you have the data the AI system needs? Is it clean, structured, accessible and properly governed?
**3. Technology and integration readiness.** Do your existing systems support AI integration? Can data flow between your CRM, ERP, databases and the proposed AI tool without significant re-engineering?
**4. Security, privacy and responsible AI readiness.** Have you considered the regulatory, ethical and security implications of the AI system you are evaluating? This is particularly important for organisations handling personal data or operating in regulated industries.
**5. People, skills and change readiness.** Does your team have the capability to work with AI outputs? Do you have a plan for communicating change, managing resistance and supporting adoption?
**6. Delivery and operational readiness.** Are the business processes that the AI will support clearly defined and documented? Can your organisation deliver and operate the solution day-to-day?
**7. Commercial and procurement readiness.** Do you have a realistic understanding of the total cost? Is budget approved? Is your procurement process ready to evaluate and contract with a supplier?
How to Assess Your Readiness
For each dimension, assess your organisation qualitatively:
- •**Advanced:** We have this in place and it would not constrain an AI project
- •**Established:** We have this in place with minor gaps to address
- •**Developing:** We have the basics but there are gaps to address before scaling
- •**Early:** This area needs significant investment before we could use AI effectively
Most organisations find they are established in one or two areas and developing or early in others. That is entirely normal. The goal is not to be perfect before you start - it is to know where your gaps are so you can address them systematically.
What Your Readiness Position Tells You
A strong readiness position across most dimensions suggests you are in a good position to evaluate and implement AI solutions in the near term. The focus should be on identifying the right use cases and finding well-matched suppliers.
A mixed readiness position suggests you should prioritise your strongest areas and select AI solutions that work within your current constraints, rather than requiring a complete infrastructure overhaul.
An early readiness position does not mean AI is off the table. It means you should focus on foundational work - data quality, infrastructure and skills - before committing significant budget to complex AI systems.
Key Questions to Ask
- •Which of the seven dimensions is my biggest constraint right now?
- •What would it take to move from early to developing in my weakest area?
- •Are there AI solutions that work well for organisations at my current readiness level?
- •What would a phased approach to AI investment look like for us?
